What skills does a dyslexia assessment explore?
The assessment explores reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension, spelling and writing, alongside language, reasoning and skills involved in processing speech sounds, remembering information and working at speed. Findings are considered together with developmental and educational history to understand the student’s individual profile.
How does online assessment work?
Before the appointment, we discuss the student’s background and concerns and I explain how to prepare. The assessment takes place live over a video link: I work directly with the student using standardised assessment tasks and written activities. It is an individual assessment, rather than an automated online quiz.
Afterwards, I bring together the background information and assessment findings in a written report. A feedback conversation gives you the opportunity to discuss the findings and ask questions.
What equipment and space are needed?
The student needs a laptop or desktop computer with a camera, microphone and a stable internet connection, plus a quiet, suitable room. For school-age candidates, an adult should be available nearby to help with practical arrangements. I explain the preparation and any materials needed before the appointment. Read the parent checklist for preparing for a dyslexia assessment.
Meet your assessor
I’m Mark Trewby, a specialist dyslexia assessor with nearly 20 years of experience in education. I hold an active Assessment Practising Certificate (0626/279, The Dyslexia Guild), PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching Learners with Dyslexia/SpLD.
My aim is to help each student feel comfortable and understand their strengths and difficulties, with clear recommendations that relate to their learning needs.
Is this the same as a dyslexia screener?
No. A screener can indicate whether further investigation may be helpful; it does not provide a formal diagnosis. This £400 service is a full diagnostic assessment with a personalised report. If you are unsure which service you need, ask during the introductory call. Read about £50 online screening for ages 8–21.
Would a face-to-face appointment suit you better?
Face-to-face dyslexia assessments in Bournemouth are available for ages 8–21, in a hired library room or at your home. The £400 fee includes room hire and travel for Bournemouth appointments.
