Online dyslexia assessments: what to expect
Updated: Oct 28
An online dyslexia assessment lets you meet a specialist assessor from home, with a personalised report explaining the findings and recommendations. At Dyslexia Tests Online, assessments are conducted personally by Mark Trewby through a live, one-to-one video appointment.
For current prices, age ranges and appointment details, see our online dyslexia assessment service.
Who is the online assessment for?
Online diagnostic assessments are available across the UK for ages 11–21. They may be helpful when reading, spelling or written work remain difficult and you want a clearer understanding of the student's learning needs. You do not need to be certain that dyslexia is the explanation before asking about an assessment.
What does the assessment cost?
The total fee is £400. This includes the introductory call, preparation, approximately three-hour assessment, personalised written report, recommendations and feedback. The report is provided within seven working days of the assessment.
Step 1: a free introductory call
Start by requesting a free 15-minute introductory call through the contact page. We can discuss the student's age, your concerns and whether an online appointment is suitable. There is no obligation to book.
Step 2: background information and preparation
Before the appointment, you complete background information and questionnaires. These help build a picture of the student's educational history, strengths and current difficulties. Assessment arrangements and any individual needs are discussed in advance.
You will need a laptop or desktop computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection and a quiet, private space. The appointment is a live assessment with Mark, rather than a questionnaire completed alone or an automated online test.
Step 3: the assessment appointment
The assessment normally takes approximately three hours. It considers reading, spelling, writing and relevant underlying learning skills alongside the background information. Its purpose is to understand the individual's pattern of strengths and difficulties.
Step 4: your report and feedback
Your personalised report explains the assessment findings and provides recommendations based on the individual's learning profile. It is delivered within seven working days. A feedback phone call or Zoom meeting is included so that you can discuss the findings and next steps.
What if we would prefer to meet in person?
Face-to-face assessments are available in Bournemouth for ages 8–21. Appointments take place in a hired room at a Bournemouth library or at the client's home. The £400 total includes Bournemouth room hire and travel. The venue is agreed before the appointment.
Is screening the same as a diagnostic assessment?
A screener helps identify possible dyslexia risk and guide next steps; it does not provide a diagnosis. The £50 assessor-led TOD-S screener is a separate service. If you are unsure which route is appropriate, discuss your concerns during the introductory call.
What if I am concerned but my child seems to be coping?
Share the difficulties you notice, including the time taken over homework, reading or written tasks. Background information matters alongside test results. An initial conversation can help you decide whether an assessment would be useful.
