Why does school say my child is coping?

School and home can show different parts of the picture. A child may participate confidently in lessons while needing considerable help or time for homework. Compare the tasks, support and level of independence in both settings, including the child’s own account.

How do we tell the school?

Start with a calm and collaborative discussion. Share clear examples of reading, spelling, memory or organisational difficulties and explain what you observe at home. It often helps to speak with the class teacher or SENCo.

What age should a child be assessed?

The appropriate timing depends on the child's development, educational experience and the question an assessment needs to answer. Support should begin when difficulties are noticed. Mark's face-to-face diagnostic assessments are available from age 8 in Bournemouth; his online assessments are for ages 11–21.

What about children with English as an Additional Language?

For a child learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), assessment needs to consider language exposure, proficiency in each language and opportunities to learn to read and write.

Where available, information about literacy in the first language can help. Difficulties in English alone do not establish dyslexia. Discuss the child's language and educational background before booking so that assessment suitability can be considered.

Why does my child seem tired after school?

Reading and writing can take considerable effort for some learners. Tiredness or distress can also have other causes. Describe when it happens and ask the young person what is difficult; persistent concerns should be considered in their own right.
