Dyslexia Support at School and Exam Access Arrangements
Updated: Oct 28
Can dyslexic children receive support in school?
Schools can provide teaching, classroom support, assistive technology and appropriate adjustments to address a learner’s needs. In England, support may involve the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo); arrangements and terminology differ elsewhere in the UK. Discuss support while any diagnostic assessment is being considered.
What are access arrangements?
Access arrangements are adjustments designed to reduce barriers during assessments and examinations. Examples may include extra time, rest breaks or use of a laptop.
Does a dyslexia assessment automatically guarantee extra time?
No. A dyslexia diagnosis does not automatically entitle a student to extra time or another arrangement.
For qualifications covered by JCQ, the school or exam centre must follow the current regulations and provide the required evidence of need and normal way of working. Speak to the SENCo before arranging a private assessment specifically for exam purposes.
Does the law recognise dyslexia?
In England, Wales and Scotland, dyslexia can meet the Equality Act 2010 definition of disability when its effects satisfy the legal criteria, including being substantial and long term. Northern Ireland has a different legislative framework. A diagnosis alone does not determine every entitlement; support and adjustments depend on the individual's needs and the applicable rules.
Can support continue beyond school?
Yes. Many young people with dyslexia continue to access support in further education, university or employment. Understanding dyslexia early can help children develop long-term strategies and confidence.
